Betty Borden

Betty Rae Borden, 80, of Apple Valley, MN, passed away on January 31st, 2024. Betty was born on February 24, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Elizabeth and Raymond McRoberts.  She attended Robinsdale High School, and went on to receive degrees from Saint Cloud State and University of Minnesota.  While attending Saint Cloud State, she met her future husband Winston Borden, and together they lovingly raised three children, first in Brainerd and then in St. Paul where they settled in Highland Park.

A beacon of warmth and humanity, Betty was a rare kind soul who made no enemies in life, apart from the occasional squirrel that raided her bird feeders. Arguably the greatest gift-giver in history, Betty was known to begin her Christmas shopping well before the prior year’s tree had been taken down and hauled to the curb. However, she wasn’t as adept at receiving gifts, leaving them unopened for months if not years. Because in gifts, as in life, she preferred giving to receiving.

Betty’s easy smile and dog-printed flannel nightgowns belied her sharp wit, wry humor, and penchant for murder mystery novels and Charles Bronson films.  Though she graced this earth for eighty wonderful years, the decency and goodness she shared while here will remain forever.

Betty leaves behind her three children, six grandchildren, two granddogs, five grandcats, and an inconceivably large collection of random wicker baskets. There will be a private memorial service to celebrate her life.
