The MACA track and field team was in action twice last week with the Section 5A True Team event in Holdingford May 6 and the Benson/KMS Invitational in Benson May 8. Through the two events, MACA finished with eight event wins, six from Grayson Gibson and two from Mitchell Moser.
Section 5A True Team
The Tigers traveled to Holdingford to compete with 10 other teams in the Section 5A True Team meet last week. The Tigers finished the meet in seventh for the boys and 10th for the girls. There were three events that ended with a MACA athlete in first place and all three of them were Grayson Gibson.
The boys team finished seventh with 310 points. Holdingford won on their home track with 637 points.
Gibson led the team by winning the 110 hurdles, the high jump and the pole vault. He finished the 110 hurdles in 15.09, cleared 6 feet 2 inches in the high jump and cleared 13 feet in the pole vault. Drake Grimm had the only other top-five finish for the boys, coming in fourth in the discus with a toss of 117 feet 6 inches.
The girls team finished the meet with 275.5 points to place 10th. Minnewaska Area won the team event with 585.5 points.
Hana Schutz was the lone Tiger athlete who placed in the top-five by finishing third in the pole vault by clearing a height of eight feet.
Benson meet
The Tigers finished their week at the Benson meet last Thursday. The team combined for five event wins, all coming from the boys.
The MACA boys finished fourth as a team with 96 points. Border West won the team event with 128 points.
Two athletes combined for five event wins. Grayson Gibson won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.32, he won the high jump by clearing six feet and also won the pole vault with a height of 15 feet. Mitchell Moser won the other two events for MACA in the throwing events. Moser threw the shot put 45 feet 10.25 inches and threw the discus 133 feet 10.5 inches.
The girls team finished tied for sixth with 60 points. Border West also won the girls meet with 121 points.
There were no wins for the girls team, but the Tigers did finish with nine top-five finishes. Layla Truenow-Garding had the highest finish, placing third in the 3,200 with 14:33.28. Izabell Hoffman and Berdine Kleindl were right behind Truenow-Garding in fourth and fifth in the 3,200. Hana Schutz was fourth in the pole vault with eight feet and also was fifth in the 300 hurdles with 52.26 and fifth in the long jump with 14 feet 5 inches.Olivia Huebner placed fourth in the shot put with 30 feet 8.5 inches. In the 4×100 relay, Mya Schmidgall, Lola Schmidgall, Schrupp and Nohl were fourth with 55.69. The team of Alayna Perkins, Annabella Ekren, Chloe Fehr and Hana Schutz were fifth with 4:31.68.
The team was back in action May 13 when they traveled to Sauk Centre. Next on the schedule, MACA will compete in the sub-section meet in Benson Thursday, May 22.
