It could not have been a much better start for the MACA/WCA girls tennis team as they officially got their regular season started with a quadrangular at Mora High School Aug. 21. In all three matches, all sets started at 2-2 due to time constraints. The Tigers swept Duluth Marshall 7-0 in their first matchup, then narrowly snuck past Pierz 4-3 and beat the host team Mora by the same score to start the season 3-0 as a team.

MACA/WCA started off with a beatdown of Duluth Marshall, winning all seven matches in straight sets to earn a 7-0 sweep.
In singles play, Lydia Sweep led the Tigers, winning the one singles match 6-2, 6-4; Sam Konz did not lose a set at two singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win. At three singles, Lauren Sweep easily earned the victory 6-2, 6-3. Leah Schei played four singles and pulled off a 6-2, 6-2 win.
MACA/WCA also won all three doubles matches in the dual. Ruby Lhotka and Annabella Ekren played one doubles and won all their sets to secure a 6-2, 6-2 win. At two doubles, the Tiger team of Bethany Backman and Magdalyne Culbertson picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win. Josie Swanson and Claire Maras played three doubles and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win.

It was a bit more of a nail-biter in the matchup against Pierz. The Tigers were pretty even with Pierz, but thanks to three singles wins, MACA/WCA earned a 4-3 win.
Three of the four singles matches went the Tigers’ way. Lydia Sweep cruised at one singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win, Konz earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at two singles and Lauren Sweep won 6-4, 6-4 at three singles.
MACA/WCA needed just one of the doubles matches to secure the win and got it from Backman and Culbertson at three doubles with a 7-5, 6-4 win.

The day wrapped up against the hosts and it was another heart-stopper. MACA/WCA managed to stay perfect on the season with a narrow 4-3 win over Mora.
MACA/WCA split the four singles matches. Konz earned one of the wins at two singles in a three-set battle 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. The other singles win came at three singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 win from Lauren Sweep.
Two of the three doubles matches went the way of the Tigers. Lhotka and Ekren played one doubles for MACA/WCA and secured a three-set win 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. The other doubles win came at two doubles with Swanson and Maras combining for a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 11-9 win.
The team was back in action Aug. 24 for the Osakis quadrangular. Next on the schedule will be their first home meet in Morris against New London-Spicer Thursday, Aug. 27.
