Morris-1 upsets top-seeded Morris-2 in 14U championship

Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta dominated the Morris Area Community Education 14U softball league this summer. The Tigers had two teams involved and they faced each other in the championship Tuesday, July 19, at the Morris Community Softball Complex in Morris.

Morris-1 won the game 9-8.

Morris-2 opened the high-scoring affair with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kiley Raths, Bailee Bellmore and Izzy Hoffman all scored in the inning.

Morris-2 went up 4-0 when Brenna Jergenson recorded an RBI, scoring Sam Konz in the third. Konz hit a triple to lead off the inning.

Morris-1 trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when Jade Marty and Hadley Koehler scored.

Morris-2 remained at an arm’s length, 5-2, adding a run in the bottom of the frame when Sophie Howell scored.

Both teams exchanged three runs in the fifth. For Morris-1, Harmony Coverdale, Sydney Holm and Marty all scored in the inning. Konz, Jergenson and Madi Swenson scored in the bottom of the fifth to give Morris-2 an 8-5 lead.

Morris-1 rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to grab the team’s first lead of the game. Coverdale, Peyton Ehrp, Ashlyn Gibson and Lily Young all scored for Morris-1, which held Morris-2 hitless in the bottom of the frame to win the championship.

Ehrp and Holm combined for the win in the circle for Morris-1. Ehrp pitched the first two innings and Holm closed out the final four innings.

For Morris-2, Brenna Jergenson pitched 5.3 innings and Leah Berlinger pitched the final two outs.
