Gregory Gordon Smith was born March 15, 1964 in Morris, MN. Greg was the youngest child of Gordon M and Gern (Sperr) Smith. He grew up on the family farm in rural Donnelly and graduated from Morris High School in 1982. He attended Willmar Technical Institute earning degrees in auto mechanics and auto body repair.
Greg left rural life and followed his oldest brothers to the TWin Cities area, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He worked for auto body repair shops and also became skilled in body work for custom-built motorcycles, including work for his brother’s business, Donnie Smith Custom Cycles.
Greg developed a passion for his own motorcycles, and shared many happy hours riding with his brothers. A proud member of the Hamster motorcycle group, Greg had hundreds of Hamster brothers. Greg also shared a love of collecting and repairing cars with his brother Mike. Travel and photography were a big part of his life, and he enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved Mioara.
The family historian, Greg shared, photographs and memorabilia and their stories with family and friends. Traditions such as the Sperr family Reunion, Donnelly Threshing Bee and Christmas the family farm were important to Greg, and he attended regularly. Greg loved his cars, his many Hamstre friends, and especially his large family. He greeted everyone with a big smile and even bigger hug. After a courageous battle with a rare blood disease, Greg’s fight ended on May 3, 2020. Taken far too soon, he leaves to cherish his memory his brothers, Donnie (Dawn Williams) Smith o Brooklyn Park, Happy Smith of Minneapolis, Mike (Rhoda) Smith of Donnelly, his beloved Mioara Taylor of Minneapoluis, many nieces and nephews, a large extended family , and his Hamster brothers. Private family services were held at Vinger Cemetery, Donnelly, MN. A celebration of life will be held in the TWin Cities at a later date.
