Steven John Schaefer, son of John and Esther (Banwart) Schaefer, was born on January 16, 1948 in Morris, Minnesota. He and his parents lived on a farm east of Hancock. After graduating from Hancock Public High School, he attended Alexandria Technical College, graduating in 1968. He then began farming with his father. At the age of 19, he became a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. On December 7, 1969, he was married in faith to Pamela Dogotch at the Apostolic Christian Church of Morris. The couple made their home on the farm Steve had grown up on, eventually moving to the town of Hancock in 2002. Steve continued to farm up until early 2020.

The most important things in Steve’s life were his faith and his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him and brought him much joy. It was his greatest wish that all of his family could meet in heaven one day.

Steve died on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at his home in Hancock, having lived to reach the age of 72.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Schaefer of Hancock; five children: Rebecca (Patrick) McMann of Ellington, CT, Michelle (Bradley) Leuthold of Rock Rapids, IA, Timothy (Kristin) Schaefer of Hancock, Daniel (Shadow) Schaefer of Hancock, and Elizabeth (Ulrich) Kaiser of Hancock; fourteen grandchildren: Zachry McMann, Ashley (Isaac) Perrine, Monica, Mikayla, Brendon and Derek Leuthold, Greta, Remington, Winston, and Kate Schaefer, and Elena (Joseph) Arnold, Esther, Eva and Emery Schaefer; and two great-grandchildren: Russell and Wesley Perrine.
