Kate's column

Blogging is not all it's cracked up to be Several years ago I tried writing a blog and soon learned that there is more to it than just sitting down and writing. I had recently retired from the newspaper and a number of people told me that they would miss reading my weekly column. One or two even suggested that I start a blog. Since I had some time on my hands, I decided to look into it. The first thing that surprised me was how much it costs to set up a blog site. There is a yearly charge to have the site and it can add up pretty quickly depending on the amenities you want with it. The next big thing was that I had to design my own site. My computer at home was not very new so this was a challenge. Attempting to get the pictures I wanted in the places I thought they would look best was an issue. And then I had to name the site. That took a lot of thought and even some research to make sure no one else had that title. The easy part was writing what I wanted in the blog. I had been doing that for years, so I just continued to pour out my thoughts in the column. I then went to facebook to gather as many ‘friends’ as I could and posted the blog name and address. Then I waited to see how many people read, liked or shared. It turned out that people were probably more likely to read it in the newspaper than on a blog site. I wasn’t surprised by this but a little disappointed. After all, my blog was simply an account of my opinion on something and not about things you could make or prepare. At the end of the year, I decided to discontinue the blog and simply keep my opinions to myself. Yet here I am, once again sharing those thoughts, not in a blog, but back in a column and I am getting a lot of feedback from readers. It astounds me at times when I hear people say that they are operating a profitable blog site. I guess I can see it if you are blogging about things that can get sponsors or advertisers to help support it. However, the blogs that just share opinions, must end up being costly and really dependant on people reading and sharing regularly. I choose not to read these since quite often the blogs are extremely critical of certain things without facts to support the criticisms. Instead, I prefer to read newspaper columns where we are encouraged to only print the facts and try our best to check out all information submitted. I hope you agree and will continue to read this column. You can even give me tidbits of information that I may or may not share with readers. I really like sharing random acts of kindness from the area.
