Letter: A Time for Mourning in America

It is a time for mourning in America. Over the past three years we have witnessed the destruction of a set of rules and norms that were part of what made America great. It feels like the eve of destruction (young folks will need to listen to the song).

Our greatest deliberative body, the US Senate, has declared itself to be a puppet of power. The facts are not in dispute. President Trump pressured the President of Ukraine to announce — but not actually conduct – an investigation into Joe Biden, in exchange for military aid, and most importantly, a formal White House meeting. Republican Senators agree with this conclusion.

The Republican Party is Trump’s party now. For the first time in US history, the President, in his own impeachment hearing, did not have to produce a single document or witness upon the request of Congress. Not one! The sycophantic Senate has officially made the Office of the President above the law.

The next few months we will hear even more about Trump’s criminal behavior. Revelations are coming out daily —  in fact, immediately after the Senate voted against gathering any documents, the US Department of Justice announced there were over 20 emails from Trump to others about withholding aid.

Even the Government Accountability Office explained that his withholding of aid to Ukraine was illegal. Imagine this: You are watching Fox News in 2021, and the next President says on national TV that he would like China to dig up dirt on his political opponent — and he even works with his personal lawyer behind the scenes to pressure Saudi Arabia to announce a fake investigation into a political opponent.

The Senate just agreed this is acceptable Presidential behavior – they won’t even censure him. To emphasize, Republican Senators largely agree that Trump committed an illegal act – they just don’t think that trying to rig the game is worthy of removal from office. Voters will decide in November if it is time for Trump to go.

Of course, it is insane to play a game with someone who has rigged the game in their favor. But, that is where we are at. Our President recently said: “Our case against lyin’, cheatin’, liddle’ Adam “Shift y” Schiff , Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, Nervous Nancy Pelosi, their leader, dumb as a rock AOC, & the entire Radical Left , Do Nothing Democrat Party, starts today at 10:00 A.M. on @FoxNews, @OANN or Fake News @CNN or Fake News MSDNC!” This is the insanity we are reduced to.

Of course, like all bullies, he would cry foul if anyone gave him similar medicine. We are going to hear people say that Trump’s behavior is OK because the economy is good and the Dems are evil socialists. Simple black and white nonsense.

This election season won’t be a fair fight, because Democratic presidential candidates will try to maintain a sense of dignity while mud is thrown all over them. This could be morning in America, though. We could demand a new President that restores dignity to the office. Someone who works to make sure our social safety net is secure and opportunity is abundant for everyone. Someone who really cares about rural America and our farming families. Someone who doesn’t bring us into our next never-ending war.

As Ben Franklin said upon leaving the Constitutional Convention, whether we have a monarchy or Republic — is up to the US.
