I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. My husband and I joined many others in our age group and got our first round of the COVDI-19 vaccine. It is a huge relief to feel somewhat protected from this disease.
Ever since the first news releases came out, we were warned that the elderly would be most at risk. Then came people who had underlying health concerns. If you had both, you better really be careful.
For the last year we have been trying to be careful but it is not always easy. We would avoid crowds and try to stay within our own “bubble” of family and friends. People told us about places that were bad and the government even shut down some of them to protect us. However, time and again we learned about people who were infected in the most unconventional ways and not easily avoidable.
We were tested twice, once after someone at work came down with the virus and another time after I came down with a bad cold and cough. Both times, we were negative for the virus. However, to be on the safe side, we quarantined for the required days.
The shut-downs were the worst. No place to go, no people to see, and the realization that many of the businesses owned by our friends were hurting badly. Eating meals out of styrofoam take out containers became common at our house.
Even though we have received the vaccine, it might not be very different. We will still be wearing a mask and being careful about hugging and getting closer than six feet. But, we might be able to do a little travel as long as we continue to follow all guidelines. We might not have to worry quite as much about catching the virus and we can see and talk to people without flinching with each cough or sneeze.
I know there are a lot of people choosing to not get the vaccine and that is totally their decision. For me and my husband, there was no decision to make. We want our lives to get back to normal and if taking the vaccine will get us on that path, I am all for it and happy to do it. I can’t wait until everyone who wants the shot can get it and life will get better.
