Owls escape with narrow win over West Central Area

The Hancock girls had a light week last week with just one game that happened to be the final regular season game of the year against West Central Area in Hancock Feb. 22.  The Owls got everything they could handle from the Knights and were locked in a tight battle all night long. Led by 25 points from Kaitlyn Rohloff, the Owls were able to narrowly beat the Knights 57-55 to finish the regular season with a 24-2 record.

Including the game against the Knights, Hancock has had three of their closest games in the final three games of the regular season. They lost to Brandon-Evansville by three, and beat BLHS by three and edged WCA by two.

Hancock started with a slim advantage over the first few minutes of the game, but the biggest lead was just six points.

The Knights did come back to hold a lead in the first half and at its largest it was 22-19. Hancock ended the half on a 13-4 run to take a 32-26 advantage over the Knights.

The Owls came out in the second half and built up a double-digit lead at 39-29.

Slowly over the course of the rest of the game, the Knights continued to chip away at the lead. WCA got the lead down to two points on three occasions, but each time it looked like WCA might tie the game or take the lead, the Owls would make a bucket or two to stay in front. Hancock managed to hold on until the final buzzer when they secured the two-point victory.

Kaitlyn Rohloff led the team with 25 points and added four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Kaitlyn Staples added 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Brooke VerSteeg chipped in with 10 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Taylor Nesvig was the only other Owl to score and she finished with four points, three rebounds and two steals.

With the regular season in the books, Hancock has secured the top seed in the Section 6A – South tournament. The Owls will play the winner of the eighth seeded Benson Braves and the ninth seeded Ashby Arrows in Hancock on Thursday, February 29.
