Rolland “Hoke” Hokanson

Rolland “Hoke” Hokanson passed away peacefully in New Brighton, MN on February 28, 2024 at the age of 81. Hoke leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity and kindness. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and the way he made the people around him feel special and valued.

Hoke was born on December 21, 1942 to Walter “Slim” and Lily Hokanson in Morris, MN. It was in a nearby town where he met the love of his life, Joan. Hoke and Joan went to college at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and wed in 1965, going on to have three children, Paul, Mark and Jon.

Hoke enjoyed a long career as a certified public accountant, devoting his life to serving others with his expertise in financial management and taxes. He valued relationships and his passion for his profession was evident in the personalized care he provided, even making house calls to his elderly clients. Hoke partnered two accounting firms, Fields & Hokanson and Hokanson & Gunderson. After retiring, Hoke continued to volunteer his tax services through the local library near Sun Lakes, AZ where he spent winters for the last several years. When not working, he enjoyed fishing, golf, travel, and summer weekends at the family lake home in Alexandria, MN.

Hoke was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lily, and his brother, Steve. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his brother, Bob (Diann); his sister, Sheri Eystad; his three children, Paul (Judi), Mark (Shoma) and Jon (Katy); and his six grandchildren, Calvin, Steve, Kaden, Kyla, Braddock and Chase.

Services to celebrate Hoke’s life will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, MN on April 22 at 10:00 a.m. for the visitation and 11:00 a.m. for the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Second Harvest Heartland.
