The Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta Tiger boys track and field team was named the MSHSL Class A state champions of 2021 following the teams’ performance at the state meet Friday, June 18, at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Over 25 events the Tigers had a score of 42, four better than runner-up Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Perham took third with a 35.
The Tigers had two individual state champions with Kenny Soderberg winning the 300-meter hurdles, recording a sub-40 for the first time this season. He clocked a 39.14 in the event and also took a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.10.
Ethan Lebrija was the second state champion for the Tiger boys. He took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.20. Lebrija also finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a 11.22.
The Tiger boys 4×100-meter relay team of Soderberg, Lewis Nohl, Derek Waldbeser and Trey Hunt finished fifth overall in a time of 43.92. This time broke the previous school record of 43.96 that has been in place since 1998 by the foursome of Bryce Baker, Joey Schmidgall, Jared Swanson and Derek Huebner.
For the Tiger girls state participants, Lydia Fynboh finished ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.64. Kaylie Raths was 13th in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.01.
The 4×100-meter relay of Olivia Lebrija, Crystal Nohl, Ruby Swenson and Fynboh finished sixth overall with a season best time of 51.08.
The Tiger girls tied for 52nd in team scoring with five points.
Minnewaska finished ninth overall with 28 points. The Lakers had two event champions. For the girls, senior Meteya Jergenson was an event champion in the discus with a best throw of 123.08. For the boys, senior Peyton Johnsrud won the high jump with a height of 6-07.
Also noteworthy for MACA, Dale Henrich was named Section 6A Coach of the Year and Tim Cannon was named Section 6A Assistant Coach of the Year.
