ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men’s soccer team finished sixth in the UMAC Preseason Poll, released by the conference office on Tuesday.
After running away with the conference title in the spring, the University of Wisconsin-Superior is tabbed as the preseason favorite in the UMAC, garnering 49 points and seven first-place votes. Bethany Lutheran College finished second in the poll with 43 points and the remaining first-place vote.
The middle of the UMAC standings look to be crowded with only 13 points separating third place and sixth place. Northland College finished third with 34 points, followed by Martin Luther College with 28 points, the University of Northwestern with 24 points, and Minnesota Morris in sixth with 21 points.
Closing out the poll were Crown College in seventh place with 14 points and North Central University in eighth with eight points.
The Cougars come into the season with a large roster featuring plenty of returners and 12 newcomers to the team. Carter Watkinson was an Honorable Mention All-UMAC pick a year ago after registering a goal and three assists from his midfield spot. Nine starters are back in total from last season’s 3-5-1 squad, while 12 incoming freshmen will vie for playing time and provide depth for the team.
Minnesota Morris opens up the 2021 season tomorrow with a 3 p.m. match at Cougar Field against Concordia College (MN). The first three matches of the season are at home for the Cougars, while UMAC play begins on Sept. 18 on the road at Crown. The first UMAC home match of the season is on Sept. 24 against North Central and will be the first of seven home UMAC matches that ends with Senior Day on Oct. 30 against Northland. The UMAC Tournament will feature semifinals on Nov. 3 and the championship match on Nov. 6.
