On Wednesday, March 11, the University of Minnesota announced that it is suspending in-person instruction and are moving to online or alternative instruction across all five University of Minnesota campuses.
On Friday, March 13, in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Health recommendations, the University of Minnesota announced its complete suspension of all spring sports.
The news release stated tht University of Minnesota, including UMN Morris, “has aligned decision making concerning whether to cancel events with recommendations of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in response to the public health concern of COVID-19.”
It also stated that, “At the University of Minnesota Morris, the safety of our community and our visitors is our top priority.”
“To that end, the decision has been made to suspend Cougar athletics games, practices, and travel following the Cougar softball team’s games on Saturday, March 14, in Clermont, Florida,” the news release added.
Both UMM Cougar softball and baseball were set to compete in Florida this week during spring break. The softball team actually left for Florida via greyhound bus on Thursday, played one game Friday, March 13 and three games Saturday before returning home.
The decision to suspend all spring sports by the campus was followed by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference’s decision to cancel remaining conference contests for the spring.
