WINONA, Minn.– The University of Minnesota Morris men’s track & field team continued to build toward the UMAC Outdoor Championships by competing in the Saint Mary’s Invitational on Saturday. The throwers excelled in the unscored meet, winning a pair of events and posting distances that rank highly in program history.
Cody Nye was the winner of the shot put with a throw of 51-1.50 (15.58m), claiming the title by nearly three feet against a field of more than 30 competitors. Bryan Zepeda was fourth in the event (44-7, 13.59m) and Anthony Staryszak was seventh at 42-6.25 (12.96m).
Staryszak had a massive throw in the discus of 149-8 (45.61m) to win by close to eight feet. That distance ranks second in program history. The freshman was also fourth in the hammer throw with a 155-2 (47.30m) that ranks fourth in school history. Luke Petersen added a sixth-place finish of 144-8 (44.10m).
In track events, top finishes included a 12th-place time of 11.71 seconds for Duncan Vandergon in the 100 Meter Dash, a seventh-place finish of 2:02.45 for Rory Shackelford in the 800 Meters, and a fifth-place time of 1:04.46 for Joshua Welch in the 400 Meter Hurdles.
Gage Rogers cleared a height of 5-8.75 (1.75m) in the high jump to take third, while Matt Kudrle was close behind in fourth at 5-7 (1.70m). Conor Thornbrugh added a third-place showing in the javelin with a throw of 139-9 (42.59m).
Next Saturday, Minnesota Morris will send split squads to the Carleton Relays in Northfield, Minn. and the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse, Wis.
