Tiger baseball hands out year-end awards

The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tiger baseball team celebrated a West Central Conference championship Thursday, July 7 at its year-end awards banquet. The Tigers had five recognized by the West Central Conference, including Offensive Player of the Year in Ross Marty and Defensive Player of the Year in Brandon Jergenson. Brett Hansen and Kaleb Breuer also earned all-conference while Kyle Fehr was named honorable mention.

Marty led the Tigers in hits this season with 30. He scored 29 times, recorded 13 RBIs and averaged .423 at the plate, best on the team for anyone over 10 at bats.

Jergenson recorded 40 assists and 23 putouts with just five errors in the field for MACA. He also had six double plays. Offensively, he was the second-top hitter with 26 hits, 17 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He only struck out four times in 83 plate appearances.

Hansen posted an ERA of 1.837 while earning four wins on the mound this season. He pitched 26.2 innings and recorded 23 strikeouts.

Breuer was tied with Jergenson in hits with 26. He had a team-high 19 RBIs on the year, batting .371 with an on-base percentage of .418. As primarily a catcher, Breuer had a team-most 120 putouts and 19 assists on the year with just three errors in 142 total chances.

Fehr was also named an all-section player. In the section tournament, Fehr had four hits and three RBIs, batting .400 in the four postseason games for the Tigers.

The team awards were also given out. Jergenson took home the MVP. Marty was named Offensive Player of the Year. Dylan Rose was Defensive Player of the Year. Toby Gonnerman received the Tiger award and Brett Hansen was Pitcher of the Year.

The Tigers had an 18-win season and the most in a season under current head coach Kirby Sayles, who took over the program in 2017.
