U.S. Moral Weakness
“Friends don’t let friends drive drunk; and we are letting Israel drive drunk,” American Middle East expert, Thomas Friedman, recently said (“The Opinions – Today,” NYTs, 05-29-25).
Israel’s long-time allies, Britain, France and Canada, recently (May 20th) denounced Israel’s expanding Gaza offensive, revealing the complicity, moral weakness and cowardice of both this and the previous administration, and the U.S. Congress, and highlighting Israel’s lack of restraint. The United States remains silent. How can we be silent? A study by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) found that 70% of the Palestinians killed in residential buildings, or similar housing, were women and children. This is plain wrong. It is also true that Hamas started this; there hands are also bloody, and they are guilty of crimes. Yet… think about this:
Imagine, in Morris, and our entire Stevens County, and surrounding counties, our homes, schools, churches, even hospital and clinic bombed till almost no structures are left standing; then, food and medical aid halted, while our children become malnourished, our hospital non-functional, thousands wounded and killed, and we are at risk of starvation. This would be a horror we can hardly imagine!
Yet, Israel continues to ignore international law with their ongoing theft of Palestinian land and their continuing brutal bombing, while withholding food aid to hungry and weakened Gazans for months. Almost no structures have not been bombed. In the meantime, those voicing opposition to this bloodbath and the hypocrisy of Israel are targets for verbal attacks or deportation (in the case of international students). I wonder, are we still a land which allows freedom of speech? What will become of the human beings in Gaza, their families, jobs, hopes and dreams? Many Americans do not realize our tax dollars fuel the bombing of Gazans through billions of U.S. dollars given annually to Israel for arms purchased from U.S. arms dealers.
The U.S. should cut off military spending to Israel, until Israel and Hamas cut a deal to free the hostages and end this….
When will the killing, or murder, end?
